One Reader's Dory

A couple of months back I received a very nice note from Bill McKay, a reader of the Muse. He sent along some nice photos of his Gloucester Gull Dory. It was built a year ago by Bill Larcher of Cape Cod and is used as a tender to the McKay's catboat Calico. Another beautiful example of this design. Thanks Bill.

Back on track

Wow, my last post was back in January. Sure is hard to write after crawling under a rock to hibernate. I have been doing a little bit of work beyond stoking the fire and keeping the bed warm.

I've been helping my good friend Peter Clapp over at Star Boat Company do some restoration work on a 60 year old sloop out of Duxbury. Much of the work isn't visible but the new canvas decks, combing, rub and toe rails do stand out.

The wood is quarter sawn red oak from Day Hardwoods to match the original. There are about 6 coats of varnish as seen here and we've added at least another 8 more. Not to mention all the sanding. I'll try to get another photo before she leaves the shop.
